School of International Studies,Hainan University(HNU) was founded in June 2004 by combining the English Department of the College of Humanities & Communications and the College English Teaching Department of former HNU. The College was joined by the English Department of the College of Humanities and & Law of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture (SCUTA) in August 2007 when SCUTA was merged with former Hainan University. With more than ten years’ efforts, the College has developed a multi-level education system covering non-degree program, undergraduate program (B.A. program), and master program (M.A. program). The College currently offers three B.A. programs: Bachelor of English Language and Literature, Bachelor of Japanese Language and Culture, and Bachelor of Russian Language & Culture, as well as two M.A. programs: Master of English Language and Literature, and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI).The College of Foreign Languages boasts a team of professional teachers with rich teaching experience and outstanding academic accomplishment. There are currently around 170 faculty members in the College, among whom, about 150 are full-time teachers with nine doctoral degree holders and 45 are professors and associate professors. They have published more than 600 papers in total, with around 130 published in nationally or internationally key journals. They have also produced some 130 publications, including 23 monographs, 39 translation works, 45 compilations and 28 textbooks. More than 160 research project applications from this College have been approved, with two at national level and over 30 at provincial level.The College gives priority to teachers’ development by creating favorable climate for teaching and academic research, and has already obtained remarkable achievements. In the past decade, teachers in the College won a number of titles and honors: one title of second-level talent of “Project 515” of Hainan province, one Baosteel Education Foundation award winner, three winners of top ten teachers in the Teaching Competition for Young Teachers of Colleges and Universities in Hainan, two winners of top ten teachers of Hainan University and six prize-winners of English Teaching Competition in Hainan Province (two first prizes, three second prizes and one third prize).Guided by the motto “Conversance with both Eastern and Western Learning, Development in Full Flourish”, the College designs its curriculum based on the features of language education and the local economic and social development. To this end, the College lays much emphasis on course development and has achieved impressive results. College English is selected as Course of Excellency at provincial level, Basic English and Advanced English as Course of Excellency at university level, and English Language and Literature as Key Discipline at university level. In addition to the language teaching, the College offers course on public diplomacy and courses related to ocean studies and tourism so as to turn its students into interdisciplinary talents with qualified language competence and global perspective.Currently, the College has an enrollment of over 1,800 students, including 1,400 undergraduates, 160 postgraduates and 180 non-degree students. The College offers university-wide foreign languages course to nearly 15,000 junior students from undergraduate program, over 700 postgraduate candidates and Ph. D candidates.The College puts teaching quality as top priority in its development plan. The College has produced more than 2,400 undergraduates and 90 postgraduates, with 21 national prizes and 148 provincial prizes awarded. A large number of graduates from this College are employed by colleges and universities, government departments and enterprises, with their performance receiving extensively positive comments. A growing number of students passed the postgraduate entrance exams and many of them have been admitted to the programs for master degrees in key Universities home and abroad such as University of Tokyo, Peking University.The College seeks to promote all-round development of its students by organizing various kinds of events, including FLTRP (Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press) Cup English Speech Contest, Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest, CTPC (China Translation & Publishing Corporation) Interpreting Contest, Shakespeare Opera Festival, Foreign Languages Drama Contest, American Culture Week, Japanese Culture Festival and Russian Night, Debate Competition, Top Ten Singers Competition and New Year’s Party, etc.In addition, the College has established diversified platforms for students to put what they learn in class into practice. Such kind of platforms have been built in Department of Culture, Radio, Television, Publication and Sports of Hainan Province, Hainan TV Station, Haikou’s Yunlong Middle College, Jiucun Primary School in Meilan district, etc. The College also encourages its students to actively participate in various international events such as the annual conference of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), Tour of Hainan Competition (an International Road Cycling Race) and foreign-related activities in Hainan University by providing translation, interpretation and other voluntary services.The College has set up an extensive links with more than 80 universities in over 20 countries and regions. Every year, the College sends teachers and students to the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Singapore, Japan and Russia, as well as Hong Kong & Macao and Taiwan, to conduct academic exchanges or for further study there. Between 2005 and 2015, the College has sent more than 100 students to study in Newcastle University in Britain, Jean Moulin University Lyon III in France, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Kyushu Institute of Foreign Languages in Japan, People’s Friendship University of Russia and National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. The College supports two teachers with doctoral degree to conduct academic exchanges in Japan and to provide translation service in Geneva, the Switzerland. And another two teachers are sent by the College, at the request from the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), to work in Confucius Institute in Ireland and New Zealand respectively.Meanwhile, the College hires some qualified teachers from Britain, the United States, Canada, Japan and France to work here as lecturers, and another twenty renowned experts and scholars from home and abroad are invited to lecture here every year.
