a) Aquaculture
This major is one of the first provincial-level key disciplines in Hainan Province and was reconfirmed in 2010 as a provincial-level key discipline, and is a key support field of the 211 Project construction project of Hainan University. Making full use of the advantages of "tropical" and "ocean" located in Hainan, this major mainly focuses on tropical aquatic economic organisms, especially tropical Marine economic organisms, through molecular biology technology, chromosome technology, transgenic technology, immunology technology, molecular marker-assisted breeding and hybrid breeding. The aim is to provide innovative scientific and technological achievements and train high-quality talents for the research, development, utilization and protection of tropical aquatic economic organisms.
The research direction is as follows:
i. Seedling breeding and reproductive regulation of tropical aquatic animals;
ii. Healthy aquaculture and disease control of tropical aquatic animals;
iii. Germplasm improvement and genetic breeding of tropical aquatic animals;
iv. Nutrition and vocabulary of tropical aquatic animals;
v. Research on tropical fishery resources.
b) Marine Bology
Marine biology is a science that studies the phenomena, processes and laws of life in the ocean, and is an important subject of marine science in earth science. Marine biology mainly studies the origin and evolution of life in the ocean, the classification and distribution of organisms, development and growth, physiology, biochemistry and heredity, and the protection, development and utilization of Marine living resources. Its purpose is to clarify the nature of life, the characteristics and habits of Marine organisms, and the relationship between them and the Marine environment, various biological phenomena occurring in the ocean and their changing laws, and then use these laws to serve human life and production.
The research direction is as follows:
i. Marine biotechnology;
ii. Protection, development and utilization of Marine living resources.
c) Fisheries Development (Professional Master's Degree)
With the approval of the Office of Academic Degrees Committee of The State Council, Hainan University has established a professional master's degree program in the field of agricultural extension and fisheries since 2007. The program is based on the provincial key discipline of aquaculture and the major of Marine biology of the College of Oceanography of Hainan University, as well as the platforms of "National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Marine Biology", "Key Laboratory of Tropical Biological Resources of the Ministry of Education", "Key Laboratory of Tropical Aquatic Biotechnology of Hainan Province" and "China-Asean Tropical Marine Biotechnology Cooperation Base". Strengthen the study and skill training of basic theories and professional knowledge in fishery technology research, fishery production, fishery technology popularization and application, fishery operation and management, etc. For fishery production and technology extension departments, fishery management departments, scientific research institutions and related units to train academic master degree graduates for the same level of fishery scientific and technological achievements development and application, promotion and management of application-oriented and composite high-level technology and management talents.
The research direction is as follows:
i. Aquaculture;
ii. Conservation and utilization of fishery resources;
iii. Prevention and control of aquatic animal and plant diseases.
