Introduction to the English Department
The English Department, initially affiliated with the School of Liberal Arts at Hainan University, began its first enrollment in 1988. In June 2004, the Department became a part of the newly established School of International Studies. In 2007, the English Department at the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture merged with the School of International Studies. We have been actively explored a system for nurturing English talents that is based on content support, local characteristics, quality enhancement at different levels, and interactive integration of teaching and research. These efforts have achieved significant progress and remarkable accomplishments, supplying a large number of outstanding talents to various industries, serving national strategies, and making positive contributions to the economic and social development in Hainan.
English Language and Literature in our department is selected as a state-level top undergraduate program, and Advanced English is one of the first batch of state-level top undergraduate courses. In 2004, we were entitled with the authorization to confer the master’s degree in English Language and Literature. In 2011, we gained the authorization to confer the professional master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting (MTI).
We currently have 49 full-time faculty members, including nine professors, 16 associate professors. Among them, there are 22 master tutors, and 18 teachers with PhD degrees (including those PhD candidates). Additionally, two foreign experts have been appointed on a long-term basis, and there are several other English language teachers. We have established a professional teaching and research team with high educational qualifications, a balanced academic background, and a favorable age structure. Among the faculty, there is one secretary-general of Hainan Province’ Steering Committee for Guidance in Professional Foreign Language Teaching, one “Top Ten Teachers” winner at Hainan University, and one outstanding graduate supervisor in Hainan Province. We have developed strengths in English literature, public diplomacy and cross-cultural studies, second language acquisition, cognitive linguistics, English-Chinese translation theory and practice, and research into public opinion on Hainan Free Trade Port.
In recent years, our faculty members have been granted eight projects from the National Social Science Fund, three major projects from provincial social science fund, and over 20 projects at the provincial or ministerial level. We have published more than 20 textbooks, monographs, or translated works, and received three Social Science Achievement Awards of Hainan Province. We have also published numerous research papers in domestic and international academic journals such asContemporary Foreign Literature,Modern Foreign Languages,Applied Linguistics, andSystem.
Our faculty members have achieved outstanding results in various teaching contests at different levels, including the top prize in the National Contest of Ideological and Political Teaching Case in University Foreign Language Curriculum and the third prize in the National Foreign Language Teaching Contest. Additionally, we have actively engaged in various forms of social services, providing simultaneous and consecutive interpretating for the Boao Forum for Asia and various foreign affairs activities, and participating in the development and review of foreign language (English) signages for public places in Hainan Province.
We have consistently committed to the fundamental principle of reading, writing, thinking, creating, and researching in talent cultivation. Our guiding objective is to cultivate students’ diverse English literacies, as well as their cross-cultural communication abilities. We place significant emphasis on the development of language proficiency, cross-cultural competence, critical thinking, self-directed learning, and innovative practical skills.
Over the recent years, our students have received numerous awards in various levels and types of academic contests. These honors include the first prizes in the National English Writing Contest, the National English Speech Contest, and the Hainan Translation Contest, among others. Our student teams have also earned the top honors in the National Cross-Border E-Commerce Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest, Excellence Team awards for Summer Social Practices, and national-level grants for innovation and entrepreneurship projects.
Our students have actively participated in volunteer services such as the Boao Forum for Asia and the China International Consumer Products Expo, receiving widespread acclaim and recognition for their contributions. Over the past three years, the undergraduate employment rate has reached 95%, with various fields spanning government, corporations, and public institutions. The graduate school enrollment rate is around 30%, with many students gaining admission to renowned domestic and international universities through various pathways. Additionally, our postgraduates in English Language and Literature have received funding from the China Scholarship Council to pursue their PhD degrees abroad or have been accepted into doctoral programs at top domestic universities.
In accordance with the guidelines for foreign language majors and the national standards for undergraduate teaching quality, we continually refine our curriculum and syllabuses, aiming to enhance our students’ proficiencies in English listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, as well as their cross-cultural competence. We offer courses in such main areas as English literature, English linguistics, English-Chinese translation, cross-cultural communication, international and regional studies (public diplomacy), and English for special purposes.
We provide a wide range of mandatory and elective courses, including Comprehensive English, English Grammar, English Listening and Speaking, English Speech and Debate, English Reading and Writing, Modern Chinese, History of Chinese Civilization, Introduction to Western Classics, Advanced English, British and American Literature, English Linguistics, English Teaching Methodology, Corpus-Based Language Research, Public Diplomacy and Cross-cultural Communication, English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting, Translation Project Practice (Innovation and Entrepreneurship), International Trade Practices, Business English Negotiation, International Trade Document Training, and Academic Writing. These courses are designed to stimulate the students’ cross-cultural thinking, enhance their critical thinking and appreciation skills, and foster their international expression of Chinese culture and wisdom.
Introduction to the Japanese Department
The Japanese major holds national recognition as a state-level top undergraduate program and a top undergraduate program in Hainan Province. Our department was established in October 2004 and began admitting undergraduate students in 2005. In 2009, we started enrolling the master’s students in the Japanese Language and Literature program. In 2017, we began admitting the master’s students in Japanese Translation.
We actively serve national and local major strategies and have formed distinct characteristics in areas such as policy research related to Japan, research on literature related to the South China Sea region, research on Hainan literature in foreign languages, and the promotion and dissemination of South China Sea culture. We have a strong faculty, excellent research platforms, and abundant research achievements, and have signed internship agreements with numerous domestic and international institutions.
Our students have the opportunities to study abroad and engage in exchange programs with well-known universities, including Tohoku University in Japan. They can also participate in various international volunteer activities and internships, such as the Boao Forum for Asia and the Tour of Hainan Cycling Race. Our students have received numerous awards at both the national and provincial levels in various contests, and the satisfaction of graduates with their alma mater and major exceeds 95%.
We currently have 18 full-time faculty members, including two Japanese nationals. There are 285 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. Among the faculty, nine hold PhD degrees, while 10 have master’s degrees, making up 95% of the faculty with postgraduate degrees. There are two professors and seven associate professors, accounting for 47% of the faculty with senior academic titles.
Among our faculty members, there is one commission in the Ministry of Education’s Steering Subcommittee for Guidance in Japanese Teaching, and there is one State Council-designated expert. There are also nine high-level talents in Hainan Province, three “Top Ten Teachers” winners at Hainan University, and one teaching master at Hainan University. Our faculty members come from renowned domestic universities such as Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University, as well as top Japanese universities including the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. All our faculty members have experiences of studying or conducting research abroad, reflecting a high degree of internationalization.
Over the recent years, our faculty members have undertaken several national and provincial research projects, published numerous academic works both domestically and internationally, and authored over a hundred research papers. We have received two second-place and two third-place awards in Hainan Province for outstanding achievements in philosophy and social sciences. Our research reports have been acknowledged by the leading officials of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government on several occasions. We have also received awards in national and provincial-level teaching contests on multiple occasions.
We adhere to the principle of cultivating students’ cross-cultural communication abilities and multicultural literacy. Our primary objective is to train versatile foreign language professionals with a strong sense of innovation and practical skills. In the foundational stage, emphasis is placed on developing students’ language knowledge and practical abilities. In the advanced stage, the focus shifts to enhancing students’ understanding of the culture of the language target country. Beyond traditional language courses, the curriculum introduces contents that are related to Chinese culture, Hainan regional culture, public diplomacy, and cross-cultural communication.
Our goal is to nurture individuals who not only possess a solid language foundation and strong language practical skills but also have a deep understanding of both China’s national conditions and the social and cultural aspects of the language target country. These graduates are expected to meet the requirements of China’s international exchanges, national and local economic and social development, and to play an important role in the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Zone with Chinese characteristics.
We offer the bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature. The main courses include Basic Japanese, Japanese Listening and Speaking, Japanese Conversation, Japanese Writing, Japanese Reading, Overview of Japan, Japanese Speech and Debate, Advanced Japanese, Translation Theory and Practice, Interpretating Theory and Practice, Cross-Cultural Communication, Research Methods, and Academic Writing.
Our graduates consistently maintain an employment rate of over 95%, with over 10% of students achieving international employment opportunities each year. The primary employment sectors include foreign enterprises, banking, tourism, aviation, information technology, schools, and government positions.
Introduction to the Russian Department
In October 2006, with the approval of the Hainan Provincial Department of Education, the Russian Language and Literature was established as an undergraduate program in the School of International Studies at Hainan University, and began admitting students in September of the following year.
Our department currently have 11 full-time faculty members, including two professors, three associate professors, and 10 PhD holders. Additionally, two Russian native-speaking foreign experts have been employed on a long-term basis.
Over the recent years, our faculty members have been awarded five National Social Science Fund projects (including one major project), one major project from the provincial social science fund, and over 10 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels. We have also published more than 10 textbooks and monographs and have contributed nearly a hundred academic papers to domestic and international journals.
Our students have received numerous awards in national and provincial contests, including the third prizes in the National Russian Language Contest, the second prizes in the Global Russian-Chinese Translation Contest, and the excellence awards in the Han Suyin International Translation Contest. They have also won the first, second, and third prizes in the Hainan Translation Contest.

Our students have been admitted to prestigious universities both in China and abroad, including Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, People’s Friendship University of Russia, Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Nankai University, Beihang University, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Foreign Affairs University, Jilin University, Heilongjiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Xi’an International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and other renowned universities with Russian language programs. Additionally, some have been admitted to non-Russian language majors at the prestigious universities, such as Fudan University, China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing Normal University, China Academy of Social Sciences University, and Southwest University of Political Science and Law.
Our graduates have diverse career paths, including positions in government departments, enterprises, schools, banks, airports, and luxury hotels.
