On the morning of September 1, 2023, Hainan University (HNU) held a ceremony to mark the inauguration of its Mission Hills campus.

Luo Qingming, president of HNU, spoke in the ceremony, indicating that the establishment of Mission Hills campus is a major step in implementing General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instruction of “supporting Hainan University in developing its world-class disciplines” and the decision of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee and provincial government. By focusing on Sino-foreign cooperative education programs, the new campus will be built into an open and high-level international campus, a new growth pole and driving force for the high-quality development of the university, a key player in the building of Hainan into an international education innovation base, and a model for China’s reform and opening up in higher education in the new era.

Fu Xuanguo, secretary of CPC Hainan University Committee, presided over the ceremony. He stated that the official opening of Mission Hills campus is a significant milestone in the history of HNU, marking a new starting point for the university to move forward and strive for excellence. He emphasized that HNU will adhere to its original mission of cultivating talents for the Party and the country, seek to become more internationalized, play a bigger role in contributing to the development of Hainan, acting as a participant, think tank, incubator, and reserve force for the building of Hainan Free Trade Port.

Li Hu, director-general of Education Department of Hainan Provincial Government, delivered the congratulatory message on the official opening of the new campus. He stated that the establishment of Mission Hill campus is not only a milestone in the facility expansion and talent cultivation of HNU, but also a vivid embodiment of the sustainable, rapid, and healthy development of higher education in the Province, which is of great significance for further deepening the comprehensive reform of education, and accelerating the development of higher education in Hainan.

The Mission Hills campus is located at No. 52 Yangshan Avenue, Longqiao Town, Longhua District, Haikou City, adjacent to the Mission Hills Resort. Its total land area is approximately 675 mu (about 450,000 square meters), and the total construction area is 320,000 square meters. Currently, the first phase of the project has been completed, with the construction of the second phase in full swing, and the preliminary work such as budget review for the third phase being initiated, with the entire campus being expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025. It is to be put into use in the fall semester of this year and welcome its first students, including newly admitted students from the International Business School and relocated students from the School of Tourism, HAITC, and Jinzhao College.
