On the afternoon of July 10th, the 27thDistinguished Scientist Lecture took place in the lecture hall of the Administration Building. It featured a keynote speech entitled “Key Factors in Urban Water Environment Management” by Xu Zuxin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Tongji University. The VIP attendees included Xu Wei, Vice Chairman of Hainan Association for Science and Technology and HNU leaders including Cao Bing, Qiu Xiguang, He Yong, Zou Yonghua, Li Buhong and Chen Jun. The event was presided over by Vice President Li Buhong.

Starting with the examples of internationally renowned projects, Prof. Xu outlined three critical factors in managing urban water environment. By analyzing a few cases of urban river pollution control, she detailed the types and characteristics of river pollution and explained the corresponding solutions and concrete measures. Next, she stressed that urban water management should prioritize the construction of sewage treatment plants and pipeline networks, sewage collection and river stagnation prevention. In addition, she highlighted the comprehensive pollution treatment through sewage interception, ecological flow improvement, scientific and systematic management, and the integration of advanced technology and major engineering projects to substantially improve water quality.

The lecture hall was fully packed with an attentive audience of students and teachers. In the Q and A session, Prof. Xu gave insightful answers to the questions concerning the status quo of waste water management in Hainan.

After the conclusion of the lecture, Prof. Xu and Vice President Li engaged in a face-to-face interaction with representatives of the young teachers and researchers from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of HNU.
Over 300 people attended the event, both online and offline, including the heads of relevant departments of Hainan Association for Science and Technology and HNU, and teachers and students from all the campuses and science & education parks.
