On May 15th, 2024, Yan Chunhua, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a lecture titled “High-level Chemistry Talents Cultivation” at Tianjiabing Lecture Hall in Haidian campus. The lecture is the 24th one of the distinguished scientist lecture series(DSLS), a brand academic event of Hainan University. The lecture was attended both online and offline by nearly 700 teachers and students from HNU’s three campuses of Haidian, Danzhou and Mission Hills, and Chengxi Science and Education Park, and Yazhou Bay Science and Education Park. Luo Qingming, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of HNU, presided over the lecture.

Yan Chunhua started his lecture by identifying the common problems in chemistry talents cultivation, and then he further elaborated on this topic from the perspectives of development trend of higher education, reform of graduate education in chemistry discipline and the philosophy for talents cultivation in the field of chemistry. Taking the practice of Lanzhou University as an example, Yan shared the key measures this university has taken in cultivating high-level chemistry genius. The measures include narrowing down the areas of research, establishing comprehensive cultivation system, setting up top level university-enterprise platform etc. Yan stressed that the reform of graduate education for chemistry discipline need to be conducted in a holistic, systematic and coordinative way, developing an effective system involving the whole process in cultivating graduate students in chemistry discipline. He also noted that the cultivation of high-level chemistry talents need to benchmark against the latest development and the key areas in this field by making readjustment to discipline and majors, and improving the teaching level.

Yan’s fascinating lecture attracted a large number of participants. They exchanged their ideas on topics related to the lecture, and posed their questions. Yan patiently responded and answers these questions with his professionalism.
