On the evening of April 8th, 2024, Mao Xianglin, a role model for poverty alleviation and the chief of party branch in Xiazhuang Village in Chongqing Municipality, delivered a lecture titledA Road to Rural Revitalizationin Xiazhuang Village. It is the second lecture of Luminaries Lecture Series in Humanities & Social Sciences initiated by Hainan University (HNU). Luo Qingming, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of HNU, and other members of Standing Committee of CPC Hainan University (HNU) Committee including Zhang Jiyou, Gao Diangong, Qiu Xiguang and Tan Yong, attended the lecture. Mao started his lecture by focusing on “road” like building a road (a road on the cliff built by villagers with Mao as the head) taking people out of the mountains, developing a road to get rich and marching on the road to happiness, presenting the hardship encountered in the process of poverty elimination. He also shared his experiences in dealing with public affairs in different periods.

When asked why he led the villagers to build a road on the cliff, he said that for the future generations, it is worth making all endeavors to build this road. It is the party members in Xiazhuang Village who take the mass as the source of wisdom and strength and work together for the same goal so that the whole village could enjoy the happy life.

He emphasized that the chief of party branch should always put people's affairs first and plays a leading role in guiding the public general to work together, so as to overcome difficulties and obstacles. The well-being of the masses is realized by the efforts of the Party members. Only when the masses trust party members and cadres can they become the most solid foundation for the grassroots Party branches.

Mao noted that after years’ efforts, radical change has taken place in Xiazhuang village. The road taking people out of the mountains is getting better, the village is more beautiful, there are more visitors now and the villagers are getting richer. Reviewing Xiazhuang village’s road to alleviate poverty, to prosper and to revitalize, we realize that today’s material and mental richness can be attributed to the fact that the party members have always regarded the people as the masters of the village, and constantly improving the dynamic grassroots mass autonomy mechanism led by the grassroots party organization.

In his closing remarks, Mao told the faculty and students present that the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people need to be protected and maintained, and the most practical issues people concerns most need to be properly addressed. Efforts should also be made to well tackle the problems related to people’s livelihood, and effective measures should be taken to satisfy the needs of people. In this way can we win the supports from the general public.
