HNU disciplines revamp in tandem with Hainan FTP

Hainan University (HNU) ranked 49th in terms of total growth volume and 5th in overall growth rate among Chinese universities, according to the recently released "Ranking of the Development Speed of Chinese Universities (2017-2022)" by ShanghaiRanking, a renowned higher education accreditation organization in China.

As the largest and leading university in Hainan, HNU has undergone three major reforms, namely the implementation of the full credit system, the establishment of collaborative innovation centers, and the adoption of the college system, following the establishment of Hainan Free Trade Port (Hainan FTP). These reforms have served as catalysts for innovation in administrative and academic ideas, systems, capabilities, and methods, resulting in significant advancements in various areas within the university.

Furthermore, in ShanghaiRanking's Chinese Ranking of Academic Subjects, the number of Hainan University disciplines included in the list has increased from 4 in 2017 to 17 in 2022, with a growth rate that ranks second nationwide. By 2023, the number of disciplines featured on the list has further increased to 25, with three disciplines—Law, Marxist Theory, and Business Administration—ranking among the top 12% in the country.

It is also noteworthy that since 2017, HNU has made remarkable progress in top-level disciplines, talent cultivation, and research projects. The number of disciplines ranking within the top 1% of the ESI (Essential Science Indicators) Global Rankings has increased from zero to eight, including Botany and Zoology, Materials Science, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Engineering, Environmental Science/Ecology, Biology and Biochemistry, and General Social Science. The number of nationally recognized talents at the university has risen from 4 to 66, with 27 being cultivated by Hainan University. Additionally, the number of research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has surged from 82 to 270, and in 2023, the university ranked 36th in terms of the number of NSFC-funded research projects.
