On the evening of December 20th, the 18thHainan University Distinguished Scientist Lecture was held at the Multi-function Hall of Siyuan Academy. Zhang Jie, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture titled “Towards the Era of Nuclear Fusion Energy”.

Zhang started his lecture by elaborating on the role of energy technology transformation in human civilization development, and then explored the development history and future trends of nuclear fusion energy from following aspects: fusion energy and laser nuclear fusion reactions as important alternatives for human ultimate energy source, the overview of foreign nuclear fusion energy development, and the opportunities and challenges of nuclear fusion energy development in China. He also described how much nuclear fusion energy will change the human society.
Zhang noted that energy technology transformation has been a crucial driving force for previous industrial revolutions, and an industrial revolution powered by nuclear fusion energy is on the horizon. Besides, China’s research on laser nuclear fusion has reached an advanced international level. Research in laser fusion for clean energy will contribute to the comprehensive development of industries such as laser technology, precision photolithography, high-performance computing, industrial robotics, desalination, nuclear energy development, and artificial intelligence.
This inspiring lecture attracted nearly 2,000 teachers and students from HNU’s three campuses of Haidian, Danzhou, Mission Hills, and Chengxi Basic Teaching Department, and Yazhou Bay Science and Education Park. At the Q & A session, some though-provoking questions were asked and got professional and patient responses from Zhang.

Luo Qingming, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of HNU, presided over the lecture. Zhang Jiyou, Qiu Xiguang, Zou Yonghua, Liu Qian and Chen Jun, members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hainan University Committee, and chief of relevant Departments were present in the lecture.
