The School of Cyberspace Security (School of Cryptology) at Hainan University was established by merging the Computer SpecialtyMajorin the School of Science and Technology at Hainan University set up in 1989 and the Computer Application SpecialtyMajorin the Computing Center at South China School of Tropical Crops (renamed as South China University of Tropical Agriculture in 1998) set up in 1993.In 1995, the former South China School of Tropical Crops set up the Department of Economics, Trade and Computer Science with Computer Applicationmajorincluded, as well asthe undergraduate major of Computer Science and Technology in 1999; in 1998, the former Hainan University set up the School of Information Science and Technology, with computer-relatedmajorsincluded, and the undergraduate major of Computer Science and Technology in 1999.In 2007, the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and Hainan University were merged to be the new Hainan University, with all computer-relatedmajors included into the School of Information Science and Technology.Hainan University set up the undergraduate major of Information Security in 2008, and established the second-level discipline authorized to offer doctoral degree program in Communication and Network Security in 2014. It was approvedto set upthe first-level discipline authorized to offer doctoral degree program in Cyberspace Security in 2014.To thoroughly implement the important indicative spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping that"Without cybersecurity, there is no national security"and the"National Cyberspace Security Strategy", Hainan University established the School of Computer and Cyberspace Security in March 2019.To implement the central government’s strategic layout of Cryptology Application and Innovation Demonstration Base in HainanProvince, Hainan University established the first School of Cryptology in China in December 2019, which jointly handled official business at the same venue with the School of Computer and Cyberspace Security.To further optimize the layout of disciplines and strengthen the construction of Cryptology and Cyberspace Security discipline, Hainan University established the School of Cyberspace Security (School of Cryptology) (hereinafter referred to as"the School") in March 2021.Prof. Luo Qingming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Hainan University, is the dean of the School.
The School focuses on the implementation of the strategy"Strengthening the School Through Talents", and has built a first-class faculty team honored with the titles of academician, special expert enjoying special allowance from the State Council,"515 Talent Project"in Hainan Province, and Famous Teachers of South China Sea.The School offers the first-level discipline authorized to offer doctoral degree program in Cyberspace Security; first-level discipline authorized to offer master's degree program in Cyberspace Security and a professional master's program in Electronic Information; and 3 undergraduate majors in Information Security, Cryptology Science and Technology, and Data Science and Big Data Technology.The School has built up an integrated training system of"Bachelor's Degree-Master’s Degree-Doctoral Degree".
Focusing on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and aiming to improve the quality of talent cultivation, the School took the lead in formulating the talent cultivation program of"Cryptology Science and Technology"and establishing the talent curriculum knowledge system for cryptology major; opened the first experimental class of cryptography in China, and cultivated and exported the first batch of commercial cryptography professionals in the country; successfully organized the first China Cryptology High-end Forum, which attracted the participation of top experts in the fields of cyberspace security and cryptology and had a significant impact on the development of national cryptology in the new era; established the first knowledge system and evaluation standard for training non-academic talents in cryptology, which filled the blank of China’s cryptology vocational education in the standard system; and carried out the program"Exploration and Practice of Cryptology Talent Training Mode", winning the first prize of Hainan Provincial Teaching Achievement Award in Higher Education.
Based on national cyberspace security strategy and construction demands of Hainan Free Trade Port, the School has strengthened the construction of innovative platforms and teams, with annual scientific research funds continuing to rapidly grow, and high-level papers and invention patents steadily increasing.The School has built up platforms including State Key Laboratory of Marine Resources Utilization in South China Sea, Key Laboratory of Internet Information Retrieval of Hainan Province, Hainan Provincial Cryptology Infrastructure, and Hainan Provincial Cybersecurity Talent Training Base.In recent years, the School has undertaken more than 90 scientific research projects above the provincial and ministerial levels, and has authorized 21 invention patents; published more than 280 academic papers, of which more than 180 papers were indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP with 2 papers selected as the top 1% of the highly cited academic papers in the academic field; and carried out the program"Research and Large Scale Application on Key Technologies for Three-dimensional Cybersecurity and Control", winning the first prize of Hainan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
The School actively promotes the cultivation of new engineering talents, and focuses on training students' innovative spirit and ability, with the aim to improve students' comprehensive quality.The School actively organizes students to participate in subject competitions and carries out colorful campus cultural activities including speeches, debates and campus singers, which are popular among students.In recent years, students have won more than 30 national-level awards and more than 150 provincial-level awards in various competitions.Graduates are popular in the market with broad employment prospects and high employment rate.
