The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture owns the authority to issue the doctoral degree at the first-level discipline of Civil Engineering (There are four research directions, including tropical island engineering of constructions and structures, littoral geotechnical engineering, tropical island engineering health monitoring and multi-disaster protection, and tropical island engineering intelligent construction and operation and maintenance management). It has the authority to issue master degree in the first-level discipline of Civil Engineering (There are seven research directions, including geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protection engineering, civil engineering construction and management, civil engineering materials, and marine engineering), and to issue a professional master degree in civil construction and water conservancy (including the fields of civil engineering and water conservancy engineering). The school originally set up four full-time general undergraduate majors: civil engineering, marine engineering and technology, architecture, and engineering management. Since 2020, they have been optimally merged into three full-time general undergraduate majors: civil engineering (including structural engineering, road and bridge engineering, intelligent construction and operation and maintenance, and underground Engineering), marine engineering and technology, and architecture. Among them, civil engineering is a special major in provincial grade, which was listed as the provincial and national first-class undergraduate special major construction points in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The school accepted the self-assessment application report of engineering education certification and the site inspection in 2021, and the major of civil engineering passed the engineering education certification in 2022.

The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture was founded in 1985, formerly known as the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Science and Technology, Hainan University. The school now has two departments, including Civil Engineering (There are five research directions : structural engineering, mechanics and disaster protection, road and bridge engineering, intelligent construction and operation) and Architecture; an experimental teaching center, two academician workstations, three academician team innovation center, tropical marine resources development key technology and equipment research center, Hainan tropical island prefabricated building engineering research center, construction engineering quality testing center, and Hainan Haida engineering design and research institute Co., LTD. The school has many laboratories, such as geotechnical, engineering materials, mechanics, building physics, construction technology, structural engineering, virtual simulation, CAD, BIM, etc., covering an area of 8,959 square meters. The school has about 1500 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates, and it has formed a multi-level education pattern with bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctor's degree, and post-doctoral mobile station. The school has "Structural Mechanics", "Engineering Mechanics" and other provincial-level quality courses, besides "Interdisciplinary integration of Tropical Ocean Engineering and Technology emerging engineering major construction" has been approved by the Ministry of Education of the second batch of new engineering research and practice projects.

The school is the main training base for civil and architecture majors in Hainan Province and South China. The School is earnest in implementing the educational policy of all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetic, and labor, insisting on taking the talent cultivation as the core, gearing to the needs of society, promoting moral cultivation, focusing on rigorous studies, attaching importance to teaching quality, paying attention to teaching research and reform. The school actively introduces advanced teaching methods and means, which establishes a mechanism of integration of production and education and school-enterprise cooperation in educating students. It cultivates complex senior technical and managerial talents with innovative quality. Since its establishment 35 years ago, the school has trained nearly 6,000 graduates of various types, mainly distributed in Hainan Free Trade Port, Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Chengdu-Chongqing, and other regions. Most of the graduates are employed by the top 500 enterprises in the world, such as China Construction, China Railway, China Communications, Agile, Country Garden, Evergrande , etc, and most of them have become the backbone of the construction industry. For the past several years, about 20% undergraduate graduates and 13% of the master students have gone to first-class universities in China or abroad for further study, and the employment rate has remained at the forefront of the Hainan University. The proportion of graduates working in Hainan province has reached 51.6%. The school has a teaching staff and management team with high academic standards and a reasonable academic and qualification structure about 145 people, including 80 full-time teachers (17 senior, 36 associate senior, 27 intermediate, and 74 doctoral degrees), 9 experimental teaching assistants (1 senior, 2 associate senior, and 4 junior or middle), 8 managerial staff. There are about 40 honorary professors, visiting professors, or part-time graduate tutors from enterprises. There are one foreign academician of the Japanese Academy of Engineering, one National Leading Talent Expert, one member of the National Tens of Millions Talent Project, one National Leading Talent of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one member of the New Century Outstanding Talent of the Ministry of Education, four members of the Hainan South China Sea Famous and South China Sea Famous Youth Project, one member of the Hainan Thousand People Special Project, five Hainan Leading Talent and four members of the Hainan 515 Talent Project. It has 14 national first level registered architects, first level registered structural engineers and registered geotechnical engineers. Among them, there are two won the first prize of provincial teaching competition, one won the first prize of Hainan Province Young Teachers Teaching Competition and the third prize of the Fifth National school Young Teachers Teaching Competition, eight won the title of outstanding teachers of Hainan University, two won the "National Xu Zhilun Mechanics Excellent Teacher Award of Chinese Mechanics Society", and two won the title of "Fifty Good Courses" teacher and "Teaching Expert" of Hainan University.

The school closely focuses on the economic and social development of Hainan and the frontier of science and engineering application research, covering structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering, engineering geology, marine engineering materials, green buildings, and prefabricated buildings, etc. It has undertaken 99 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key Research and Development Plan, the Natural Science Foundation of Hainan Province, and the key Research and Development Project of Hainan Province. It has published more than 200 academic papers in famous journals in China or abroad, 11 monographs (teaching materials), more than 160 authorized patents, 4 scientific and technological achievements transformation, and 26 provincial and ministerial level and above scientific research awards. At the same time, the school actively carries out academic exchanges and cooperation with relevant universities and scientific research institutions in China and abroad. For example, it co-sponsored the 19th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Basic Issues of Optoelectronics and Microelectronics with the Far East Branch of the Russian National Academy of Sciences. It has hosted the National Forum for Young Scholars of Geotechnical Engineering, the Third National Symposium on Comprehensive Disaster Prevention and Green Building Technology in Villages and Towns, Symposium on Engineering Safety and Protection, the compilation Conference of Wind Tunnel Test Standards for Bridge Structures. The school has invited many famous experts and scholars in China and abroad to give lectures and to make academic reports.

The school actively carries out school-enterprise cooperation, and promotes the integration of production and education, collaborative education, and scientific and technological innovation. The school has been elected as the chairman unit of Hainan Civil and Architectural Society, the vice chairman unit of Hainan Prefabricated Building Industry Technology Alliance, and the chairman unit of Hainan BIM Alliance. It has signed school-enterprise cooperation agreements with China Construction, China Railway, China Communications, CSIC, Agile, Country Garden, and other top 500 enterprises, as well as 40 enterprises such as Shanghai Construction Engineering Group, Hainan Port and Shipping Holdings Co., LTD., Hainan Construction Project Planning and Design Institute, Zhongshang United Taisheng Construction Group, Hainan Zhejiang University Steel Structure Co., LTD. In addition, it has undertaken activities such as structural design Competition for school students in Hainan Province and architectural style design competition for rural residential buildings in Qiongzhong County.

At present, our country is implementing the major development strategy of building a free trade port with Chinese characteristics, which requires many localized high-quality civil and architectural professionals, as well as a high-level civil engineering discipline and school. With the goal of promoting the economic and social development of Hainan and the South China Sea as the goal of personnel training and discipline construction, the school takes the construction of doctoral programs as the lead and traditional civil engineering-related disciplines as the basis. It aims to move into the field of Marine civil engineering and to build a first-class discipline with distinctive characteristics of tropical, island and ocean. In 3-5 years, the school will be built into a teaching and research school with "Marine" characteristics and certain influence in China, which will consider civil engineering and Marine engineering as the primary disciplines and develop architecture and engineering management and other disciplines in a coordinated manner.
