1. Overview
The School of Fine Arts and Design of Hainan University traces its origins back to the establishment of the Art Department in 1985. With each passing year, it grew in significance and influence. In 1988, it welcomed talented undergraduates specializing in Art and Crafts Design, marking a pivotal moment in its development. By 1989, it underwent a transformation, earning the distinguished title of the College of Art. The college further solidified its reputation in 2007 when it obtained the prestigious authority to confer Master’s degrees in Fine Arts. This milestone was followed by another triumph in 2014 when it gained the authorization to award Master’s degrees in Art. In March 2019, the college underwent a significant reconfiguration, emerging as the magnificent College of Fine Arts and Design, distinct from its former identity as the College of Art. Presently, the college boasts two undergraduate programs of exceptional caliber: Visual Communication Design and Painting. These programs have garnered national acclaim, being recognized as “National First-Class Undergraduate Programs.” Within the Visual Communication Design program, students can specialize in a range of captivating fields such as Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Tourism and Landscape Visuals, Animation Digital Art, Exhibition and Interior Space Design, Tourism Cultural and Creative Product Design, and Fashion Visual Design. The Painting program offers aspiring artists the opportunity to nurture their talents in the realms of Chinese Painting, Oil Painting, Sculpture, and Comprehensive Materials. Moreover, the college proudly houses two master’s programs, namely the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art Design and the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Fine Arts. A vibrant community of874 full-time students, consisting of 733 undergraduates and 141 postgraduates, fills the hallways and studios of this esteemed institution. Looking ahead, the college has an exciting future planned. In 2024, it will undergo a grand relocation to the Guanlanhu Campus (International Campus) of Hainan University. This move sets the stage for an extraordinary transformation, as the college aspires to become an internationally renowned hub of creativity and innovation. With its sights set on achieving world-class standards, it aims to redefine the landscape of art and design education in the thriving artistic realm of Hainan Free Trade Port.
